Weekly Creatures: Emu in Oregon

In Wildlife Safari, Oregon, visitors can drive through the preserve to see native and exotic animals. This emu actually walked up to the car window. It was terrifying. These birds are enormous, and its red eyes looked very angry. Fortunately, we escaped with our lives and later saw American bison, a brown bear snoozing, lions, camels, and paid an outrageous price for an elephant to wash my car.

My hope is to return someday.

Locust Landing

This is by far the largest insect I have seen in my small back yard, measuring at least 3 inches in length. I found him while pruning one of my plants, hiding away from the Arizona sun, and flew to the perfect spot in the tree for photographing–and he even waited for me to run inside to grab my camera. However, he became too threatened by my invasive lens and flew at me. I may have squealed and run away.
